What is the difference between an airship and a blimp?

An airship is built around a hard outer hull which allows it to retain its shape even when it is not filled with helium. A blimp, on the other hand, is built around a semi-rigid structure similar to a balloon that does not retain its shape when filled with a lifting gas.

LTA is building next-generation airships at a scale that has not been attempted for more than 80 years. To build airships that are lighter, faster, safer, and more capable, we have reimagined and redesigned every component, from the engineering and materials to assembly and pilot training.

Our airships will have the ability to complement, and even speed up, humanitarian disaster response and relief efforts, so that many more lives can be saved. Airships do not require aviation infrastructure like airstrips and landing zones, allowing them to deliver food, equipment, supplies, and other life-saving aid to areas impacted by natural disasters.

Solar and electric-powered airships will produce no emissions and have the potential to substantially reduce the total global carbon footprint.

LTA has already generated new jobs in Ohio, California, and Nevada. Airships will continue to generate new jobs and economic growth in the regions where we are developing, manufacturing, and building them.

How did LTA Research train to fly Pathfinder 1 before it was built?

Accepted Answer

Our highly advanced flight simulator allows our pilots to learn to fly and maneuver Pathfinder 1 before we set foot in the cockpit. Our pilots are also conducting ongoing flight training on airships such as the A-60 and A-1-70. Our flight training goes well beyond the minimum standard set by the FAA.

Our first full-size airship, Pathfinder 1, is being built in Mountain View, California. Pathfinder 3, our largest, most capable airship yet, will be built in the storied Airdock in Akron, Ohio.
